Energy crisis

I'm watching a film called The Cloverfield Paradox. It's on Amazon prime.

In this science fiction Earth runs out of energy sources such as oil and sends a particle accelerator to harvest energy from the universe into space.

I wonder what low tech solutions we have to the energy problem.
